GRANT ON HOLIDAY

GRANT ON HOLIDAY
GRANT IS THE ONE ON THE LEFT

I’m supposed to be on my holidays, you know. Booked a week off and everything. But I forgot to tell anyone else to write the newsletter, and - honestly - you’d miss me if wasn’t here. No-one else has the weird mix of arm’s-reach disinterest, desperate appeals to your conscience and weirdly erotic findom play designed to get all that money out of your tight little wallet and into our big hungry pockets.

So I’m dashing this off into a google doc and hucking it in Naomi’s direction and you’ll get what you get when you get it.

(Social Media Wretch note: now! today! not because I forgot until last night in a cold sweat! honest!)

DIE METADUNGEON NUMBER BIG, COULD BE BIGGER

Die metadungeon screenshot where you can see the current number is 169,246 GBP

Number big for Metadungeon! But as the launch of the Dungeoncrawler Carl Backerkit proved, there’s apparently no upper limit for how big number get, and WE WANT BIGGER NUMBER STILL.

Give us some of that number, Renegade. You don’t need all of that number. Surely you’ve got enough number from the My Little Pony Roleplaying game. Quit being such a number hog. Give it us.

Part of the current bigness of number has been put towards paying reclusive French artist Stephanie Hans to draw us chapter headers, which is nice; our next stretch goal is to contract Lin “OGL Controversy” Codega to do us a piece on what the hell TTRPGs are now, and where they’re going next. (Wretch note: You already got Lin, it’s Kieron 2: More Kieron’er now)

Anyway. If you’re not current part of that big number, get the fuck in here and push the button that makes it bigger. You’ll get a book in return! A good one, by Gareth Hanrahan, with six decades of real-world geek lore in it disguised as an adventure. Make it happen. I believe in you.

CHILDREN OF TIME NUMBER BIG, COULD BE BIGGER

Listen. Shh shh shh - hold still. Remember the whole “number” thing? We have two types of numbers to deal with today: the money type which we can use to make books, and the follower type which we use to extract the money type. This number is the follower type and baby it’s free for you to make bigger with but one click.

The Children of Time roleplaying game is, and I’ve played it so you can trust me, pretty good. (Although I would say that, wouldn’t I?) Mina’s done a great job of balancing the “make up a big story about post-human people that lasts for thousands of years” and “zoom in on one particular loser and see how badly something goes for them” parts of play, and it makes for a fun experience. It’s a bit like Legacy and a bit like Microscope and a bit like Dialect and a bit like Spire, which is a solid combination.

So go click the Follow button. You won’t regret it.

JAMMY SODS

We did a Havoc Jam! It was great. Jim, Chant and I all picked out our favourites and gave them our official Seals of Approval, which is to say we drew seals with our faces on and told people they could put them in their game. You can read all of our recommendations here.

The official peer review voting is complete, too, so you can see the winners here and maybe buy a couple safe in the knowledge that they’re probably decent. Congratulations to BONE TO PICK for coming first, and also congratulations to BONE TO PICK for being a very funny game about reanimated skeletons enacting very petty revenge from beyond the grave.

CONVENTIONAL WISDOM

Convention season begins once more (has begun? Never ended?). We’re still not visiting America - might wait for the pedophile who seized control of the government to sputter his decrepit last before we come back en masse - but we’ve got plenty else on, and elite operative Maura is still representing us in the Land of the Free. Here’s the list as it stands:

  • UK Games Expo, Birmingham NEC, May 29-31
  • Origins, Columbus, June 17-21
  • Pyrkon, Posnan, June 19-21 - (and DEEP, a special games design day, on the 18th)
  • GenCon, Indianapolis, July 30 - Aug 2
  • Rolisboa, Galveias Palace, September 19-20
  • Dragonmeet, London Excel, November 28
  • PAX U, Philadelphia, December 4-6

Come along and see us, why don’t you?

HOLIDAY TIME

Right. That’s everything. My holiday starts now. Gonna knot my hankie, stick it on top of my head, roll up them trouser legs and strip down to only a greying vest in an attempt to turn bright red as soon as possible. Hand me those whelks, Muriel.

Kindest regards,
Grant “Holiday” Howitt
